Thank you!

With your help and support, I was re-elected to the Board of Governors of Wayne State University on November 4, 2008. As a member of the Wayne State Board, I am committed to representing Michigan’s working families.

Therefore, I will continue to be a strong voice on these issues:

  • Affordable Tuition. Wayne State University must remain financially accessible to all. In these difficult economic times, our top priority is keeping tuition affordable for new high school graduates, transferees from community colleges, and older and non-traditional students seeking additional skills to compete in Michigan’s changing economy.
  • Quality Education. While the state cut funding for Wayne by $50 million, we worked to maintain high quality faculty and staff. Students must be assured that Wayne degrees are worth their investment and will be respected by future employers.
  • Expansion of Educational Opportunity. Wayne State University has improved partnership agreements with the Community Colleges in Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, and St. Clair Counties, to allow community college students to transfer to Wayne, to pursue Bachelor’s Degrees.
  • An Economic Development Engine. Wayne has helped transform Midtown, with new student housing, state-of-the-art research and education facilities, and public-private economic development projects. In addition, Wayne has continued to upgrade its campus, to provide students with a clean and safe learning environment in the heart of Detroit.
  • Research as Spark Plug in the Economic Engine. Wayne researchers are conducting many important scientific, engineering, and medical experiments which will enhance Michigan’s future. This research is yielding technical innovations to spur job creation in Michigan’s “new economy,” as well as medical discoveries to treat serious health problems and save lives.

Again, thank you for re-electing me to the Board of Governors of Wayne State - our great university!
